Platinum Jubilee Celebrations 2022

On 4th June 2022, Thompson celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During the afternoon children played games, decorated cup cakes and crowns and enjoyed a picnic tea.

In the evening we enjoyed a barbeque and watched the Concert from Buckingham Palace

To celebrate the Jubilee The Millennium Green planted an oak tree, kindly donated by Chris and Tina Sales. A commemorative plaque was donated by Kevin Blake. The Tree was registered with The Queen's Canopy as part of an initiative to plant trees across the country to celebrate her Jubilee.

The tree was planted by three children from the village

After helping to plant the Jubilee Oak Tree, Lucy wrote to the Queen to let her know. The pictures above are of the reply she received.

Village Celebration 2021

A FUN AFTERNOON WITH THEMED PICNICS, GAMES, AND CAKE

On 11th September 2021 Thompson residents got together on the Green for a fun afternoon. There was a focus on themed picnics with prizes given for the most unusual or inventive.

There was a nod towards VE Day with some participants dressing up in WW11 costumes. Funding that had originally been granted for a separate VE Day event was used towards the village celebration.
Everyone gathered around midday and throughout the afternoon children and adults enjoyed some old fashioned silly games. It was also a chance for new residents to get to know their community. There was a competition for the best themed picnic, and a chance to show off home grown produce, with a prize for items such as a wonky vegetable and the biggest weed!

The sun was shining brightly, which was very much welcomed after many days of being isolated from each other. There was a large celebration community cake made up of donated home cooked tray bakes and decorated with union jack toppers. This was so popular that there are plans to replicate this cake idea for the Queen's Jubilee celebration in June.

Thompson 10k & 5K Run
The original Fun Runs were the brainchild of local resident John Biggs who came up with the idea to prevent local footpaths from closing.

Runners would keep to open permissive paths. During this early version the distance was only 5K as most participants would just take part to raise money for various charities.

After a break of some years the Thompson Run was re-instated with a different route along roads with more formal runners taking part, some of them belonging to registered running clubs.
Please see Thompson 10K & 5K Run page for up to date information, results and photographs from the previous years races.

Book Worm Days

The Book Worm Days were an annual event that involved participating residents decorating their front gardens in the theme of a particular book.

The challenge was to go in search of the Worm, hidden somewhere within those gardens!
